Character and Fitness Committee
The Character and Fitness Committee includes 15 members (13 attorneys and 2 lay members), with three-year terms and no term limits. Due to the amount of time it takes for the Committee members to learn the Committee’s rules and processes, members’ terms are often renewed several times. The Committee conducts investigations and holds informal and formal hearings with respect to bar applicants’ character and fitness. The Committee reviews those applicants who are recommended to the Committee by the Admissions Director. The Committee determines whether an applicant has the requisite character and fitness to be recommended to the Supreme Court for admission to the Nevada Bar, often after holding an informal or formal hearing. The Committee is divided into Panels of 3 to 5 members (as designated by the Committee Chair) to hold hearings throughout the year, with the busiest times being immediately after bar results are released for the two bar exams each year (May/June and October/November). Committee members can expect to spend a minimum of 50-100 hours per year preparing for and participating in hearings.
