Is there a charge for using the Lawyer Referral Service?
There is no charge for requesting a lawyer referral. It is a free public service.

The attorney you are referred to may charge a $45 initial consultation fee. If you decide to hire that attorney, fees are negotiated directly between you and the attorney.

How do I request the name of an attorney?
There are two ways to obtain an attorney referral. You may call and speak with one of our LRS staff; they will ask questions about your legal issue and can provide a referral by phone. The phone number is 702-382-0504 or toll free 1-800-789-5747.

You may also obtain a referral online through a self-directed portal. This is a good option if you know what kind of lawyer you need or if calling after regular business hours.

How does LRS operate?
When you call the LRS, an assistant will ask you a series of questions to determine whether you do need legal assistance and if so, what type of attorney you may need.  You will be given the name and telephone number of an attorney who accepts cases in the area of law which covers your issue. A confirmation of the referral will be emailed to both you and the attorney. If the attorney is not able to assist you, you may call the LRS for additional referrals.

Are LRS attorneys qualified?
More than 300 lawyers participate in the LRS program, offering their services in 22 broad areas of law and 170 subcategories. To participate in the LRS, the attorneys must be active members of the State Bar of Nevada in good standing and have liability insurance. Attorneys choose the practice area panels from which they will accept cases. A referral to an attorney who has indicated his or her willingness to accept cases in a particular area of law, however, does not mean LRS, the State Bar of Nevada, or any other agency, board or committee has certified said attorney as a specialist or expert in the indicated field of law. Additionally, an LRS referral does not mean that a certain attorney is any more competent than any other attorney. All callers must make their own independent investigation and evaluation of any lawyer being considered.

What if I can’t afford an attorney?
All LRS attorneys are private attorneys and will arrange their fee with you. If you cannot afford to pay an attorney’s regular fees, LRS will either attempt to prequalify you for a reduced fee attorney or refer you to another legal services agency. Reduced fee attorneys may charge no more than $25 for the initial consultation, and they agree to charge no more than $75 per hour thereafter.
