On July 6, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada issued General Order 2021-03, which designates the district’s magistrate judges to exercise jurisdiction over civil matters. The magistrate judges are specifically designated to enter final judgements in civil cases, provided all parties to the case consent to proceed before the judges as established in the order.
Starting July 7, 2021, a percentage of all newly filed civil cases will be assigned blindly, randomly, and proportionally to magistrate judges via the court clerk’s random civil case assignment system.
The following types of cases will not be assigned to magistrate judges; only district judges will receive:
- Bankruptcy appeals;
- Bankruptcy withdrawals;
- Prisoner habeas petitions;
- Prisoner civil rights cases; and
- Cases in which a motion for a preliminary injunction or temporary restraining order is filed simultaneously with the complaint.
For more information, including parties will be notified of civil case assignments to magistrate judges, see General Order 2021-03.
