On Sept. 15, 2022, the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada issued a press release reminding the public that the federal courts do not place phone calls or emails requesting money to avoid arrest.
The press release was issued in response to a trending scam targeting citizens throughout the U.S., including Nevada. Scammers threaten their targets with prosecution for failing to pay a bond, appear for a hearing, or appear for jury service. Targets are often pressured to provide confidential personal information or make some sort of immediate payment.
Nevada’s federal courts wish the public to be aware that if they receive such a call, it is fraudulent. The courts will not ask for sensitive information or payment over the phone.
