Description
This Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course provides an essential and in-depth overview of AB 227, the comprehensive overhaul of Nevada’s adoption statutes enacted during the 2025 legislative session and effective October 1, 2025. Designed for family law practitioners, judges, and agency professionals, the course delivers practical guidance on navigating the restructured legal framework governing adoption in Nevada.
Participants will be introduced to the fully rewritten adoption chapter, which modernizes and clarifies adoption procedures across a wide range of scenarios. The course will cover the newly codified categories of adoption—including confirmatory adoptions, re-adoptions, independent adoptions, agency adoptions, close family adoptions, and adoptions through social services—with a focus on how each is initiated, processed, and finalized under the new law.
Emphasis will be placed on streamlining procedures, enhancing due process protections, and improving legal certainty for all parties involved. The course will also explore how the revised law integrates with broader areas of family law, including assisted reproductive technology (ART) and parentage determinations, ensuring clear and accessible pathways for confirming legal parentage in cases involving surrogacy and gamete donation.
While the primary focus is on the structural and procedural improvements to Nevada’s adoption law, the course will also touch on implications for LGBTQ+ families and the equal protection changes that have been made to protect bio moms equal to bio fathers, including the elimination of outdated language and removal of legal obstacles.
