Volunteers Needed for Inmate Mediation Panel

Magistrate Judge George Foley is inviting attorneys to apply to serve with the district court's Early Mediation Program for Section 1983 Inmates in the Southern Division of the District Court. The Early Mediation Program was developed to help resolve the huge influx of pro se civil rights cases filed by inmates; inmates file claims about their religious rights, the use of excessive force, their medical treatment and retaliation for exercising constitutional rights. Inmates may seek damages, injunctive relief or both.

The goal of the Early Mediation Program is to settle cases before either party begins motion practice or active discovery. Program volunteers act as a mediator between inmates, the Nevada Department of Corrections representatives and the deputy attorney general. All mediations are held at the Lloyd D. George Courthouse and mediations are set for three hours on Fridays.

Interested parties should contact Julia Wright, Judge Foley’s judicial assistant via email or by phone at (202) 464-5575.  Prior mediation experience is preferred, but not required and training programs are offered through the court.
