Cherry to Receive Distinguished Alumni Award
Washington University is honoring Nevada Supreme Court Justice Michael A. Cherry with the Distinguished Alumni of the Year by his law school alma mater, Washington University School of Law. The award will be given to Cherry on April 19 at a ceremony at the school, which is in St. Louis, Missouri.
Cherry earned his Juris Doctorate from the school in 1969 and after graduating came to Las Vegas a Deputy Public Defender for Clark County. Cherry worked in private practice, served as an alternate judge for the municipal court, served as a pro tem Justice of the peace and was a Clark County Special Public Defender before being nominated to the bench in 1998. He was elected as a Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court in 2006.
“Being honored by my law school in the city where I was born is a tremendous honor. I have always been grateful for the education I received at Washington University and, before that, at the University of Missouri. It prepared me well for the tasks I have faced on the bench in Nevada,” Cherry said.
