Being raised in a family that stressed the importance of giving back, and working for law firms that also believed giving back was integral to being a successful attorney, it is not surprising Las Vegas family law practitioner Bob Cerceo frequently takes on pro bono cases. Cerceo says that all his pro bono cases have been special, but one in particular stands out from the rest. “Nearly 10 years ago I received a phone call from a Norwegian national,” Cerceo says. “It started with ‘my children have been kidnapped.’ ” The case, known as the Vaile case, began when a woman, desperately wanting her children back, was advised by Barbara Buckley (who had received calls from both the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Interpol) to call Cerceo. “It was the right kind of work and the right kind of client; it involved multiple states and several countries and was a good introduction into practicing law on a much larger scale than I’d ever expected,” Cerceo explains. Litigation on the case continues to this day, but the children have been returned to their mother. Cerceo encourages all practitioners, new admittees in particular, to take on more than one pro bono case at a time.
