Western States Bar Conference – The Spread of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE)
On March 21-24 the SBN Executive Committee and Executive Director Kim Farmer attended the Western States Bar Conference at the Mirage in Las Vegas. Among other presentations, National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) President Erica Moser and NCBE Chair Rebecca St. Theiem presented a program entitled “Uniform Bar Exam and NCBE’s Content Validity Study.” The speakers indicated that eight jurisdictions – Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Washington – have formally announced their adoption of the UBE, which offers portability of test scores across state lines. Montana has adopted the UBE conditionally – that is, subject to final approval of an implementation plan. Six of the states will administer the UBE during 2012, with the rest expected to implement the test during the next year or two. Several jurisdictions are well on their way to adopting the UBE. The NCBE expects to have 20 jurisdictions adopting the UBE by the end of 2013.
