LLOYD D. GEORGE PROFESSIONALISM AWARD
bY KaTHleen Jane enGl and, PresidenT, sTaTe bar of neVada
this month I wanted to share the remarks of Senior U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd D. George announcing John h. Mowbray as this year’s recipient of the Lloyd D. George Professionalism Award. the following remarks from Judge George were made at the Las Vegas Professionalism Summit on October 13, 2009:
This year’s recipient, like all past recipients, truly embodies what is good about our profession and proves the adage that in order to be a good lawyer, you have to be a good person, too. This year’s recipient comes from a distinguished Nevada legal family and his family name embodies professionalism in the legal community and contributions to the larger community of our city and state. Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to announce to you that this year’s recipient of the Lloyd D. George Professionalism Award is:
JOHN H. MOWBRAY
We, in the legal community, are not the only beneficiaries of John’s contributions. A life-long Boy Scout, John has served on the Las Vegas Area Boy Scouts Council as its president. He has also been the president of the local chapter of Eagle Scouts. In recognition of his great service to scouting, in 2004, the Boy Scouts of America awarded John the Silver Beaver, one of the highest awards given in scouting. I am told that John considers this one of his highest achievements. A proud graduate of Notre Dame University and Notre Dame Law School, John returned to his Nevada home after law school. John was first admitted to the practice of law in Nevada in 1976. John continues to dedicate himself to his beloved alma mater, serving on the board of the Las Vegas Notre Dame Club and as the club’s president. John’s community service is generous and ongoing. A regent of Bishop Gorman High School, John has served on the board of directors and as president of the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. The organizations benefiting from John’s guidance are too numerous to list completely here, but they reflect the wide diversity of his interests. John has served on the boards of the Red Rock Canyon Interpretative Association, the Southern Nevada Conservancy, the City of Las Vegas’ Post Modern Museum and The Outside Las Vegas Foundation. Even John’s hobbies have brought him national recognition – as an amateur photographer and astronomer, John has taught an astronomy lab at CSN and seminars at Red Rock Canyon how to photograph the night sky. As for the distinguished legal career of John H. Mowbray, he has distinguished himself as a stellar litigator in the world of real estate, commercial transactions and construction defects. John is widely admired as a wellprepared and worthy opponent, thorough, persistent and honest. John possesses a wit and sense of humor often put to good use to defuse a tense situation. John is also well-known as a helpful colleague and friend, as well as a caring mentor (not to mention that he is also a great dad.) John began his legal career in 1976 with a clerkship for U.S. District Court Judge Roger Foley. In 1978, he went to work for Morse & Foley, became a partner in Morse & Mowbray in 1984 and remained in that position until September 2006. On September 1, 2006, John joined the national law firm of Fennemore Craig as a director and managing partner of their Las Vegas office. Like the community organizations he has served, John has been a leader in the legal community, often called upon by his legal colleagues to lend his leadership skills to legal organizations. John has been a board member and president of the Clark County Bar Association. For six years, John was elected by his peers to be on the state bar board of governors. John became president of the State Bar of Nevada in his 7th year. John is a founding master of the Howard McKibben Chapter of the Inns of Court, and a colleague of the Nevada Law Foundation. John chaired the state bar’s multijurisdictional practice committee and many other committees. John Mowbray epitomizes all that we as lawyers strive to be: John is smart, hard-working, respected, committed, grounded in reality, unfailingly courteous, honest, and with a strong sense that as leaders and lawyers that we lead by example, not words.
