A Note From the Issue Editor
By Hon. Robert J. Johnston
March is Women’s History Month. In 2010, I had the good fortune to be in Washington, D.C. for a business trip, and while I was there, I had the opportunity to see an inspirational display in our nation’s capitol honoring prominent women throughout U.S. history. Inspired, I returned to Nevada determined to honor Nevada’s pioneering legal women in a similar way. The result is the issue you hold in your hands. Inside, you’ll find a strong mix of articles focusing on both past and present, from our historic summary on page 6 to a very current look at career growth for female attorneys in Nevada on page 28. And on page 7, you’ll see a list noting many of the women who’ve held legal positions for the first time in Nevada’s history. From this list, we’ve selected a few individuals who’ve made significant contributions to Nevada’s legal community for a series of profiles, beginning on page 18. I invite you to join me in honoring these legal pioneers. This issue could not have come together without the assistance of several individuals, including Dr. Joanne Goodwin from the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada; Guy Rocha, former state archivist; past bar president Kathleen England; the team from UNR’s Center for Research Design and Analysis, and additional contributors too numerous to mention. I’m immensely grateful for their hard work and significant contributions, and hope you enjoy reading the results as much as I enjoyed putting it together. JUDGE ROBERT J. JOHNSTON has served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge since 1987. In 2010 he was reappointed to the Ninth Circuit Conference Executive Committee having previously served from 1996 to 1999, participating in organizing three circuit conferences. Additionally, he served on the 9th Circuit Magistrate Judge Executive Board from 2003-06. Johnston served as a member of the Court Administration and Case Management Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States Courts from 2004-2010. He is also a board member of the Nevada Judicial Historical Society and the Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society.
