A Note From the Issue Editor
BY GREGORY R. SHANNON, ESQ.
We started off trying to set up a small anarchist community, but people wouldn’t obey the rules. – Alan Bennett
Rules. You can’t get away from them. Our profession in particular is governed by a wide variety of rules – rules of civil and criminal procedure, rules of evidence, local court rules, Supreme Court Rules and, of personal interest to the conscientious lawyer, rules of ethics and professional responsibility. This month’s issue of Nevada Lawyer features articles, from members of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, designed to provide guidance on current ethical topics. Committee chairman Alan Freer gives us a primer on minimizing potential firm disqualification arising from lateral hiring. Shawn Harpen and Paul Hejmanowski elucidate the unfinished business doctrine. Jennifer Lewkowski brings us tips on staying ethical in the digital age; her article includes a quiz good for one CLE ethics credit. Denise Bradshaw asks Bar Counsel David Clark for answers to common ethical dilemmas. And Brett Kandt presents an overview of the duties of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility and explains how to request advisory opinions on ethical issues. These feature articles contain a wealth of knowledge but there’s much more, including the State Bar of Nevada’s Annual Report, which contains some very interesting statistical data, and this month’s Back Story, part two of our resident historian Patty Cafferata’s article on Nevada’s second constitutional convention. I hope you find this month’s Nevada Lawyer useful and informative.
Letter to the Editor
The articles on the legislature are beautifully done and the list of bill drafts is a valuable asset for any Nevadan interested in our state’s future! I applaud your publishing it! Sincerely, Carol Chesnut
