A LETTER FROM THE
Welcome to the September 2013 issue of Nevada Lawyer, celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month and highlighting the many positive contributions made by Hispanics to law in Nevada. As a former federal judge for the District of Nevada and Attorney General of Nevada, I’ve been privileged to have had a front row seat during some of the most exciting times for Hispanic lawyers in this state. Also, during my decades of practicing law, I’ve had the opportunity to practice and serve with some of the finest lawyers and judges one could ever know. I’d like to take this opportunity to recall my law partnership with Teo Gamboa, an attorney who is recalled with fondness and respect by all who knew him. I still remember Teo’s commitment to the Hispanic community and his tireless efforts to help its members with their legal issues. Teo taught me so much about the law but, more importantly, about the importance of treating everyone with dignity. May he rest in peace. Throughout my professional career, it has been extremely rewarding to work with the Hispanic community. From serving on the Board of Nevada Hispanic Services, to presiding over citizenship ceremonies as a judge and hosting the Hispanic Heritage Days Celebration at the Governor’s Mansion, it is exciting to watch Hispanics emerge in leadership roles throughout our great state. In closing, I offer my congratulations and thanks to Nevada Lawyer for celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month and recognizing the many contributions Hispanics have made and will continue to make in the Nevada legal community.
