PrESErVInG ThE PAST In ThE PrESEnT For ThE FuTurE:
The Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association (LVNBA) established an archive at the Wiener-Rogers Law Library at the William S. Boyd School of Law in April 2011, the 30th anniversary year of the founding of the LVNBA. The LVNBA has a strong interest in documenting and sharing its history with the community and researchers. That interest naturally coincides with the law library’s commitment to preserving and enabling access to materials that enhance scholars’ and students’ understanding of important events and movements that have shaped the local community and the state. The archive currently includes documents, photographs, film, ephemera – materials of all types and formats – that relate to the LVNBA and its members. The original donation that allowed the archive to become a reality came from Arthur L. Williams, Jr., a founding member of the LVNBA and its president for two terms. Since 1981, Williams has collected documents, photographs, newspaper clippings and other materials about the LVNBA, its activities and membership.
The law library invites donations to the archive from members of the community who may have documents, photographs and other items that relate to the contributions of African-American lawyers to the Nevada community. The LVNBA is also undertaking oral histories of LVNBA members and other individuals in the community. The law library looks forward to creating physical and digital exhibits that highlight the LVNBA and the contributions of its members to the State Bar of Nevada, Nevada law and government, and the Las Vegas community.
